Allen Bradley Micrologix info
In the classroom I use some older Allen Bradley Micrologix 1000 series PLCs when I have the need for PLC instruction. They are inexpensive, readily available, and unfortunately no longer supported.
The link below will give you the basic downloads, which were available for free but are getting hard to locate.
It is a zip file, about 140MB and will need to be extracted. You can then run the autorun.exe file and follow the setup prompts.
Please note that I make the links and some of my setup available for use, but I do not provide tech support or warranties. Some students see my setup in the classroom and would like to build something similar.
Your computer will need a 9 pin serial output or you can use a USB to RS-232 dongle, though I have not always had good success with cheap ones.
PLC I/O Controls
You may wonder why bother with the Micrologix 1000 series? If you are familiar with these, then all of the more recent (and much more expensive) AB PLCs will not offer a steep learning curve. You can download the software above, get a capable PLC on the resale market and learn to program these controllers.
